What is it?
An affidavit is a document that must be sworn to be true by oath or affirmation.
A translator's affidavit (or affidavit for translation) is a document that says the translation completed by the translator is a true and accurate version of the original text.
The translator must swear that their translation is a true and accurate representation of the contents of the original document in front of a commissioner authorized to administer oaths.
Affidavit's are typically required for translations completed by non-certified translators. However, if you are a professional translator certified by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) you may not necessarily a commissioned affidavit (but you may need a cover letter / statement of accuracy). You should always check with the receiving organization to see whether a commissioned translator's affidavit / affidavit of translation is required to accompany your translation of an original document.
